"Uncertain Closure"
a celebration of personal dystopia
This series of paintings and single-channel video depict apocalyptic hybrids of beast and machine silhouetted against the setting sun.
In addiition to providing a cryptic narrative about the birth of nightmares, they are an exploration of the tension between flatness and depth, representation and abstraction, and finally, narrative and the muteness of the visual image.
I am intrigued by the simultaneous creepiness and curvaceous elegance of the organic form. In my work, these vague notions of plants and animals become unnatural hybrids and give way to the sterile geometry of the new machine.
Sunsets anticipate the night and are a time of transition and uncertain closure, and in my work I draw upon the false sentimentality and the pretense of the staged scene that have become popular associations with this time of day.
Placing figures in front of this light creates silhouettes that with minimal detail revealed, become mysterious.
