Gilded Basements
This exploration of the basement windows of ordinary urban housing attempts to reveal the mystery hidden beneath the everyday. Basements are the metaphorical and litreral subterennean worlds beneath our feet, where we store the remants of personal histories and the occasional kidnapped victim. There is an unavoidable creepiness that the basement carries in its architectural history.
The absence of color except for gold pushes the images toward the iconic, flattening them while making them apper allegorical. The basement windows themselves appear both ordinary and strange, and having been photographed from the outside, the surroundings take on character, appearing honorific, much like offerings on an altar.
