A Strange Turn
childhood & fairytale dystopias

In this group of paintings the colors are oddly off, some are nearly monochromatic and veer towards the imagery and sepia glow of Golden Age children's books illustration - before quickly veering off.

Interior spaces of the home such as the bedroom and bath become the staging area for the imagination; the air is mysteriously filled with birds, fire and archaic flying machines: 'miracles' of Western progress, and black children become the passive recipients of these idealized depictions of privilege.

The works also draw from the unintended creepiness of much of children's book illustrations, especially those from bygone eras. In these paintings, I try to create both a sense of wonder that is nevertheless made strange by the odd detail and disorienting palette. From these images the viewer can piece together a counter-narrative of the fairytales and bedtime stories of his or her own childhood.
